Bill Johnston Dr. William J. Johnston (Professor of Turfgrass Science) Dr. Johnston has been a faculty member at WSU for 25 years. He teaches two courses in Turfgrass Management, Forage Crops, and coordinates the Crops Internship and Special Problems courses. He currently serves as the academic advisor to all turfgrass majors in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. Dr. Johnston received his B.S. from Penn State University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Auburn University. His current research focuses on snow mold control, Kentucky bluegrass seed production without open-field burning of post-harvest residue, and selective control of bentgrass in cool-season turfgrasses with Mesotrione. Charles GolobCharles T. Golob (Research Supervisor) Charles Golob has been working with Dr. Johnston for the past 20 years as a Research Technologist and has been recently promoted to Research Supervisor. He was born and raised on a dairy farm in the Yakima Valley and received his B.S. and M.S. in Agronomy from WSU. He is curently in charge of various research projects and manages the Turfgrass Research Facility.


Karine PareKarine Paré (Associate in Turfgrass Research/Instructor) Karine Pare aids in research projects and undergraduate instruction. She is teaching a new course in Turfgrass Management entitled "Introduction to Turfgrass Science and Industry". She is the Turfgrass Program webmaster. Karine received her B.S. in Agronomy from Laval University, QC, and her M.S. in Horticulture (Turf Management) at the University of Guelph, ON, Canada.


 

Graduate Students

Matt WilliamsMatthew W. Williams (M.S. Candidate) Matt is currently a M.S. candidate focusing on weed control and turfgrass tolerance using mesotrione, a relatively new herbicide. He has also served as a teaching assistant, instructing the lab section of ‘Weed Ecology and Management.’ He received a AAAS in Turf Management from Walla Walla Community College in 2001, and a B.S. in Crop Science (Turf Management option) from WSU in Spring 2005.






Kate DodsonKatie Dodson (M.S. Candidate) Katie Dodson is currently a M.S. candidate, who is continuing the development of a high-yielding Kentucky bluegrass variety for non-thermal seed production. She is focusing on both seed production and turf quality, and the relationship between the two. She received her B.Sc. in Earth Sciences and Environmental Ecology from Dalhousie University. As an undergraduate she was active in the Dawson Geology Club and represented the club at the Dalhousie Science Society. After graduation she went to Taiwan, Thailand and Japan to teach English and experience other cultures.

The turfgrass program at WSU Puyallup is coordinated by Dr. Eric Miltner and Dr. Gwen Stahnke, turfgrass scientists at the WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center. Ms. Randi Luchterhand and Mr. Matt Johns work as turfgrass research technologists. Learn more.
